B-IT Research School will offer new opportunities for excellent students of B-IT master programs in Media Informatics and Life Science Informatics to continue their studies in a PhD program, but also addresses outstanding international students from outside B-IT to apply.

The PhD programs is entirely taught in English.

B-IT Research School is run by Aachen University and the University of Bonn under the participation of the Fraunhofer Institutes, located at Schloss Birlinghoven near Bonn. The directors are Professor Dr. Matthias Jarke (RWTH Aachen) and Professor Cremers (deputy director, University of Bonn). Accepted students are exposed to the inspiring learning and research environments of both universities, and the participating Fraunhofer Institutes.

In a 2009 survey by the Economics journals Wirtschaftwoche and Handelsblatt , the head recruiters of the biggest German companies were asked to evaluate the universities in Germany. In the ranking RWTH Aachen was selected as best university in Germany. RWTH Aachen secured a first place not only in its Informatics programs but also in four other categories (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Economics & Business Administration, and Natural Sciences).

Graduates with a degree by RWTH Aachen are deemed to be best prepared for the job and are preferred to be hired by the companies. In the 2009 edition of the prestigious CHE Rating by the weekly Die Zeit , the Informatics department at RWTH Aachen again reached the top research rating as one of only four universities in the German-speaking countries. In addition to that, students will also be taught by high-level international lecturers. B-IT research School started in October 2008. The well structured PhD programs ensure that accepted students are quickly familiar with their respective fields of doctoral research on one hand whereas B-IT partners lay the foundation of a comprehensive education on the other hand. The approved new B-IT Research School also acknowledges the success of B-IT master's programs in Media Informatics and Life Science Informatics which have been run since 2003. B-IT Research School has been included into the NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia) Research Schools of Excellence.

Scholarship AmountThe scholarship amounts to 1.468 Euro per month, tax free. Scholarships can be granted for a maximum of three years, with an intermediate evaluation. Under certain conditions, increased scholarships are available for candidates with children.

Ten '4 years' International PhD Programme fellowships in Biomedical Science at CRG, Barcelona, Spain

For the academic year 2010-2011, ten PhD positions will be available at the Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG) of Barcelona, Spain, thanks to the generous support of “la Caixa”, the third largest Spanish financial institution.
The CRG is a basic biomedical research centre, created at the initiative of the Catalan Government, with the participation of the Pompeu Fabra University, and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. The objective of the CRG is to promote excellent basic research in biomedicine and, particularly, in the genomic and proteomic fields. The CRG is located at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB). Research at the CRG is centered around six scientific programmes, with extensive interdisciplinary collaborations across the following areas:

Fellowships will be renewable on a yearly basis up to a maximum of four years and stipends will be competitive internationally.

PhD position in experimental surface physics at NTNU Norway

One PhD position within experimental surface physics is available at Department of Physics, NTNU. The research activity is directed to scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and synchrotron photoelectron spectroscopy investigations of surfaces and interfaces with emphasis on model systems for catalysis and energy applications. Current research topics include palladium based systems for hydrogen permeation and nanoscale metal oxide structures applied for solar cells, gas sensors, photo catalytic devices and in heterogeneous catalysis. The synchrotron experiments are performed at facilities abroad. The group has strong collaboration with researchers at the universities of Uppsala and Lund as well as with other departments at NTNU.

PhD fellowships at NTNU are normally awarded for a total of 3 years with the possibility of until 1 year extension with 25 % teaching duties.

The position is organized at the Department of Physics. Currently, there are 26 professors, 10 associate professors, 7 adjunct professors, 55 PhD research fellows and 25 postdoctoral positions appointed at the Department of Physics.

It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. The Department of Computational Biology at CSC conducts research about the function of neurons, neuronal networks and the brain, i.e. in computational neuroscience. It is the leading lab in the field of computational neuroscience in Sweden and collaborates closely with Dept. Neuroscience at Karolinska institutet. Within the Erasmus Mundus PhD programme “EuroSPIN” we now seek PhD students with a profile towards neuroinformatics, including computational neuroscience.

The Department of Machine Design at the School of Industrial Engineering and Management seeks four talented PhD students.

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.

Activities at the School of Industrial Engineering and Management cover the engineering, technological and economic knowledge necessary to be able to develop new products, material and production processes in a sustainable fashion as concerns technical management, financial profitability and the environment. One precondition for innovation and enterprise is the study and application of basic physical and chemical phenomena as well as the integration of new, often multidisciplinary technologies, methods and tools. Core knowledge areas include industrial design and innovation, product and production development, materials development, micro and nano technology as well as industrial economics, organization and management.

About the positions

Mechatronics entails optimal integration of technologies – mechanics, electronics, software and control – in order to develop products with new functionality and improved performance. Road vehicles are maybe the most obvious example of applied mechatronics. A modern car has a large number of micro computer based subsystems which cooperate over different networks. Examples of new functionality include engine control, steering and braking systems and active safety systems.
Design of mechatronic systems puts new demands on methods and tools as a basis for true integration of subsystems, tools and competencies, and thereby facilitating efficient design, implementation and verification. This is a substantial industrial challenge which today hinders cost effective product development.

The four positions span three different research projects according to the following:

• Architectures and methods for dependable and flexible vehicle embedded systems. The project is funded mainly by the VINNOVA FFI program.
• Design and optimization of future mechatronic road vehicle subsystems, e.g. x-by-wire systems. The project is funded mainly by SSF via its ProViking program.
• Technologies for mechatronic subsystems in heavy vehicles (brakes, steering). The project is funded mainly by the VINNOVA Gröna Bilen II program.

The Mechatronics Lab offers a stimulating and multidisciplinary research and teaching environment including around 20 researchers, teaching staff and technicians. Much of the activities involve quite substantial cooperation with industry and with international partners, especially in Europe. The work opportunities for people with a PhD degree in the field are remarkable.

Qualifications

A suitable background for this position is a Master of Science degree combined with strong interst and/or experience from one or more of the areas mechatronics, embedded systems, system design, modelling and simulation, automatic control and product development.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies and must possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis and hold good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities. Fluent English, spoken and written, is a requirement as PhD student. A corresponding capability in Swedish is a merit.

City University London's success in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirmed a major step-change in our research profile. World-class activity was recognised in many areas, leading to an increase of over 50% in our quality research funding. Based on that success, we have recently concluded a major review of research and knowledge transfer, which has allowed us to redefine our research as an all-inclusive set of activities comprising basic and applied research, policy- and practice-focused research, knowledge and technology transfer, entrepreneurship and consultancy. As we prepare for the future, our attention is focused on demonstrating the societal value of our research and the impact it makes on business, industry, government policies and the professions.

Our research and enterprise activities are more exciting and diverse than ever, with subjects ranging across business, social sciences, engineering and mathematics, informatics, law, music, journalism, cultural policy and a wide range of areas in the health-related domains.

The Centre for Law, Justice and Journalism is the first major interdisciplinary centre in the UK to develop a broad yet focused interface between law, justice and journalism in society. The Centre is offering 5 three-year, full-time doctoral studentships, available to both home and overseas fee-paying students.

Applications are invited to undertake interdisciplinary doctoral research in a topic relevant to the five main themes of the Centre:

• Legal Restraints on the Media
• Transformations in Media Policy
• Journalism and Human Rights
• Media, Security and Justice
• Communicating Forensic Evidence

For entry in October 2010 or earlier if possible, the studentships will attract a bursary of £12,000 per annum in addition to payment of the tuition fees. Successful candidates will usually be expected to undertake some teaching support activity in their second and third years, by agreement with the School concerned.
